1 in every 5 children struggle with food insecurity and hunger in Texas, and when the regular school year ends some children lose regular access to nutritious meals. The federally-funded SFSP (Summer Food Service Program) offers reimbursement to local organizations that provide free, healthy meals to children over the summer months when there are school closures. The summer meals provided by Summer Food Service Program sites are required to meet the federal nutrition standards, and the meals must include whole grains and fresh vegetables and fruits. Some meal distribution sites also offer educational summer activities to help children continue to engage in learning during the break from school. The SFSP is part of the United States Department of Agriculture’s Summer Meals Program, which is administered by the Texas Department of Agriculture here in Texas. The families who participate in the Summer Food Service Program are not required to apply, register, or provide personal identification in order to receive meals.
