Why do we Observe School Lunch Heroes Day?
Lunch is many students’ favorite time of the day. They get to relax, socialize, and recharge for the second half of the school day. Public school nutrition workers play a vital role in making lunchtime special. They spend time putting together thoughtful and nutritious meals, as well as helping students walk through the cafeteria line. And they do it all with smiles! As Judson ISD posted, “Cape or no cape, they are doing something heroic.”
Cafeteria Staff are True Heroes
The School Nutrition Association says, “between preparing healthy meals for America’s students, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, school nutrition professionals are true heroes.”
Nutrition Workers Save the Day
North East ISD Superintendent Dr. Sean Maika visited district cafeterias to personally thank nutrition staff. While speaking to second-grade students, he said, “cafeteria workers were kind of like firemen when COVID-19 hit. But instead of running to the fire, they ran to the kitchens to make sure no one went hungry during the pandemic.”
In addition to serving meals throughout the pandemic, nutrition workers have continued to “save the day”. During the recent ice storms, nutrition staff continued to get food to children and families in need.
