Armstrong Elementary was transformed into a hub for all things STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) at their first ever STEAM Family Night. Students and their families had an opportunity to participate in hands-on activities such as DIY lava lamps, insulator stations, and powering lightbulbs without electricity. A live art show was also in the mix featuring original art from students of different grade levels.Also in attendance was the San Antonio Astronomical Association (SAAA). The association provided several powerful telescopes for stargazers to have a stellar view of the planets.  “We are showing them the real world. They get to see it with their own two eyes,” said Danielle Rappaport, Public Programs Coordinator of the SAAA. “We answer questions about constellations and planets and also give parents advice on how to purchase a stargazing instrument.”

Mrs. Sheryll Putnam, 5th grade teacher of Armstrong Elementary, says the reasoning behind this event is to introduce students to the STEAM field and inspire them to be proud of their many talents. “I want everyone to see that our students can be talented and smart in so many different ways” said Sheryl. “To be able to open up opportunities like these is a great start for our school and our children.”
