Register for School in the Houston and Gulf Coast Area
When do I Register my Child for School?
Many school districts begin registration for the following school year in the early spring, sometimes as early as February. However, school districts often have a late registration period for those who miss the spring enrollment dates.
When do Kids Start Kindergarten?
Texas law says that a child who turns five by September 1st in a given school year is eligible to begin kindergarten that same year. Even earlier, children as young as age 3 can enter a preschool or pre-k program to help prepare for kindergarten and elementary school.
Besides the age requirements, children are usually ready for kindergarten if:
- They are able to take direction from an adult other than their parents.
- They are able to sit and listen to a story.
- They are able to ask for help when necessary.

Documents Needed to Enroll in Public Schools
- Birth certificate
- Immunization records
- Proof of residence
- Parent ID
What is Proof of Residence
It is very important to validate your true residential address. The address used for school enrollment cannot be a temporary house or a place where you own property but do not live. You are not allowed to use the address of a family member, a friend, or a previous home. You and your child must currently live at the address you provide. This policy ensures that as our school districts grow, the district taxpayers fund the education of students within their current district.
Proof of residence examples include:
- A current lease
- A copy of a current utility bill (gas, electric, water)
- A copy of closing papers on a newly purchased home
