Houston Region Afterschool Programs

Many school districts in Houston offer a wide array of before, after, and summer school programs. Outside of school time is important, and parents are welcome to take advantage of the many programs that are offered. Houston’s traditional public schools provide a variety of interesting and exciting activities from rock climbing to math tutoring. These kinds of activities are designed to keep students engaged during their time out of school. Below are some of the programs offered to students throughout Houston’s traditional public schools

21st Century Community Learning Centers

21st Century Community Learning Centers or CCLC program in Texas is called the Texas Afterschool Centers on Education program (Texas ACE).

Texas ACE programs are funded by grants from the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and provide high quality, hands-on, creative, and exploratory supplemental enrichment activities that work with the schools’ regular core academic programs. Statewide evaluations of Texas ACE show that students in these programs have higher test scores, fewer school-day absences, and fewer disciplinary incidents.

After School Learning Centers

Several Houston-area school districts extend ACE programs to students through the Communities in Schools Afterschool Centers on Education (CIS-ACE). These extra enrichment learning opportunities provide academic and tutorial services to assist students in meeting local and state academic achievement standards in math, reading, social studies, and science.

CIS-ACE also delivers an assortment of enrichment activities such as health, nutrition, wellness, youth development, fine arts, science, technology, physical fitness, community service, career exploration, civic responsibility, mentoring, and workforce readiness.  Students and families participating in CIS-ACE are also given opportunities for parenting, literacy, technology, and educational development.

YMCA

The YMCA has an extensive Before & After School program that provides youth a safe and supervised place to spend mornings and afternoons during out of school time.  By promoting supportive social interactions and reinforcing social and academic learning concepts, the YMCA programs help students discover their interests and envision what they can achieve.  Houston area YMCA programs provide structured and unstructured playtime, assist students with homework help for those needing a tutor, promote student choice and voice, foster positive peer interactions, and supply wholesome snacks. There are multiple locations and program options at the numerous YMCA locations in the Houston area.

4-H Club

Another popular program in Houston’s school districts is the 4-H Club. Children participating in 4-H can experience interactive projects in areas like agriculture, health, science, and civic engagement in a supportive environment while receiving guidance from mentors who encourage them to take on significant leadership roles.  Read more about your community after school 4-H club here.
