Abilene ISD proudly celebrated the dedication and commitment of its employees during the 2025 Service Awards and Retiree Reception, held Tuesday, May 6, at Abilene Christian University’s Hunter Welcome Center. This annual tradition honors those who have devoted their careers to shaping the lives of students and families across the district.
This year, 128 employees were recognized for reaching service milestones ranging from 15 to 50 years, while 53 retirees were honored for their lasting contributions. From classrooms to kitchens, from maintenance to administration, the evening celebrated careers built on impact and integrity.
Among the honorees was Jim Waddle, recognized as the district’s longest-serving employee with an incredible 50 years of service in AISD’s warehouse. Other standout honorees included Randy Sparks (maintenance, 45 years), Jo Campbell (special education, 40 years), and Stephanie Eaves (student nutrition, 40 years).
The evening’s most memorable highlight was the meal, which was planned, prepared, and beautifully plated by AISD’s advanced culinary arts students. These talented students are enrolled in a rigorous course offered at The LIFT, open to students from all AISD high schools. The course not only provides in-depth instruction, but also prepares the students for success with industry-driven standards.
Throughout the year, these students gain real-world experience through hands-on work at The Sky Café, a student-run bistro located at The LIFT. There, they focus on scratch-made foods with seasonal and global influences, building the kind of culinary excellence they brought to this event.
On the night of the reception, the student chefs showcased their advanced skills in timing, plating, and presentation. Working in a real-time kitchen environment, they carried out a full-service meal for a large crowd, demonstrating teamwork and professionalism. From sauce work to dessert, every element reflected the students’ hard work, creativity, and passion for the culinary arts.
