Cambridge Elementary began the school year with a special event on Patriot’s Day in Alamo Heights ISD, honoring the bravery and dedication of first responders. This group, made up of military-connected students and families, gathered to welcome special guests from the San Antonio Police Department and the Alamo Heights Police and Fire Departments. The celebration was a heartfelt tribute to the first responders who serve the community every day, as well as a remembrance of the heroes who stepped up in the aftermath of 9/11.

To show their appreciation, the students and families created colorful, handmade signs for their guests, which were shown during the event. The signs will hang in the police and fire department offices as a reminder of how much the Alamo Heights and Cambridge Elementary communities value and appreciate their service.

Karyn Shelnutt, AHISD Military Liaison, emphasized the significance of Patriot’s Day for military families, many of whom were deeply affected by the events of 9/11. “We wanted to especially focus on our first responders and service members that help keep our country safe,” Shelnutt said. She added that the event was an important way to connect students with real-life heroes and show gratitude for their ongoing service. The Cambridge Hooah Huddle’s event was not only a way to celebrate first responders but also an opportunity to instill a sense of community and appreciation for those who protect and serve.
