Plano ISD Student Wins Scripps Spelling Bee

Community cheers for Faizan Zaki at DFW Airport

Plano ISD celebrated Faizan Zaki from Rice Middle School for winning the 100th Annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. Having competed and placed second in the 2024 competition, this win demonstrates Faizan’s growth and commitment to achieving his goals.

Faizan officially secured his title as champion after successfully spelling the word “éclaircissement,” meaning “the clearing up of something obscure: enlightenment.” This word suits the joyous moment when Faizan won, as the stress of the competition cleared, and he dropped to his knees with a smile.

The Plano ISD community showed off its pride with a surprise homecoming celebration for Faizan at the Dallas-Fort Worth Airport. Family members, PISD staff, and a bee mascot welcomed Faizan home with encouraging posters and bright balloons.

This jubilant celebration demonstrates PISD’s pride in its students and district vision: “Committed to excellence, dedicated to caring, powered by learning, Plano ISD proud.” Faizan’s determination and preparation highlight his district’s values and show the great things public school students can accomplish.
