Judson ISD is bringing hands-on learning outdoors at Candlewood STEM Academy. Through practical STEM activities, students are investigating sustainability and gardening in collaboration with Gardopia Gardens.
With plans for an outdoor learning area, pollinator garden, and orchard, students have planted broccoli and spinach in raised beds beneath a new pergola. To help students learn about soil conditions, irrigation systems, and plant life cycles, three teachers are pursuing certification as gardeners.
With Eagle Garden Days, when volunteers may assist with tasks like mulching and planting trees, principal Rachelle Diaz is thrilled to engage the community. A cookery workshop will later educate families on how to prepare fresh meals using the school’s bounty.
Students’ education, environmental consciousness, and sense of community are all increasing as a result of this program.
