Aldine ISD Shines at Tommy Tune Awards

G.W. Carver Magnet High School from Aldine ISD made a powerful impression at the 2025 Tommy Tune Awards, bringing home multiple honors for their production of Dreamgirls. Held at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, the event recognized excellence in high school musical theater across the Greater Houston Area. Carver competed in the Tier 1 division, which highlights large-scale productions.

Among the night’s biggest moments was senior Alyssa Dorsey being named a Jimmy Awards® Nominee, one of the highest honors in high school theater. She will represent Carver and Aldine ISD on the national stage in New York City this summer. The school also earned top-tier awards in several categories, including Outstanding Ensemble, Technical Achievement, Music Direction, and Direction.

In total, Carver received 11 awards, including the Spirit Award for Reagan Wilson, and individual honors for students Jamar Hawkins, Niya Kelly, Zariah Tatum, and Kasean Francis. The achievements continue Carver’s strong tradition in the performing arts; since joining the Tommy Tune Awards in 2008, the school has earned more than 160 nominations and 32 wins.

Under the leadership of directors Roshunda Jones-Koumba, Jabari Collins, and Jamar Hawkins, Carver’s fine arts program continues a streak of excellence for Aldine ISD. The school’s recent success affirms its role as a creative hub in Houston’s arts education landscape and showcases the impact of theater in public education.
