The spirit of storytelling is still alive at Alamo Heights ISD as students gather this week for the 2025 Martha Spoor Young Writers Workshop. Now in its 15th year, the workshop continues to honor the legacy of Martha Spoor, who was a beloved English teacher, AHHS alumna, and lifelong champion of student voice.
Throughout the week, sixth and seventh grade students have explored poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Laptops open, notebooks filled, and imaginations open, they’ve learned to tell stories that are uniquely their own. The energy in the classroom can be almost be felt through the pictures, with students smiling, typing, sharing, and supporting one another’s work in a community built around creative expression.
The workshop ends in a final showcase of student writing in the AHJS Library, where families and friends are invited to hear selected pieces written during the week.
The Martha Spoor Young Writers Fund, established in 2008 by Tookie and David Spoor in memory of their daughter, helps make this experience possible each year through the support of the Alamo Heights School Foundation. It carries forward Martha’s legacy by providing young writers a space to grow in both skill and confidence.
