Our San Antonio-area Independent School Districts serve 340,238 students. Our school zones are broken up into ISDs (school districts).
The districts cover Bexar, the Hill Country, Comal, and Wilson counties.
Principals, teachers, counselors, nurses, and maintenance are a few of the roles working together to create an environment that is safe and supportive. Academics and extracurricular clubs provide opportunities to all students with varying interests and skill levels.
Mr. Smith started his career in education in July of 1994 in Azle ISD. He taught agricultural science at Azle High School, served as a high school assistant principal, principal of Walnut Creek Elementary, director of district operations, assistant superintendent, and interim superintendent from March 7, 2020, until being named Superintendent in June of 2020.
Smith earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Services and Development and Master degree in Educational Administration from Tarleton State University. He holds various certifications, including Texas Superintendent Certification, Mid-Management Certification, and American Association of School Superintendents National Certification.
He is also a member of many professional and community organizations. Mr. Smith is passionate about serving the Azle ISD community. His community involvement includes Optimist Club of Azle Member, Azle FFA Alumni Association Member, Azle Rotary Club Member, Azle Area Chamber of Commerce Ex-Officio Board Member, City of Azle Storm Water Board, and Azle PD TCLOS Advisory Board Member. He was named Citizen of the Year by the Azle Area Chamber of Commerce in February 2023.
Smith lives in the area with his wife, Shannon. They have two sons who graduated from Azle High School, Zack in 2008 and Kleg in 2016, and four grandchildren, Madelyn, Barrett, Bowen Todd, and Rhett. His hobbies include spending time outdoors, hunting, fishing, and spending time with family and friends.
