Southwest ISD offers Pre-K thru 12 Aeronautical STEM Program.
Southwest ISD provides students first-hand experience and exposure to new opportunities within the aviation industry in a groundbreaking Aeronautical STEM program.
During the 2018-2019 school year, Bob Hope Elementary School will implement a 5th grade aerospace curriculum with participation from the Blue Sky Educational Foundation and the highly acclaimed Blue Sky Program.
There is also outside of the classroom learning experiences for 8th graders at Resnik Middle School and Southwest High School students.
Grants to Southwest High School will allow for teacher training of Aircraft Owner and Pilot Association (AOPA) materials in Maryland, and The Dee Howard Foundation and its community partners, and the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) has already begun working with students on an anticipated two-year program to build an RV-12iS aircraft.

DR. LLOYD VERSTUYFT

Dr. Lloyd Verstuyft graduated from Southwest High School, San Antonio, Texas in 1981. He has been employed in different capacities at SWISD for twenty-seven years. His professional experience includes three years as a teacher/coach; two years as a middle school assistant principal; six years as middle school principal; four years as high school principal; two years as Executive Director of Administration and Pupil Service; five years as Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Human Resources; and is currently serving in his seventh year as SWISD’s Superintendent of Schools.

During his professional career, Dr. Verstuyft has had the privilege to work with some of the best staff and students associated with any school organization. Southwest Independent School District and the southwest San Antonio area have been Dr. Verstuyft’s home- both in upbringing and career, and he is extremely proud of his roots. He is committed to working with the 14,500 plus students in the SWISD District and community members to develop post high school success

Most recently Dr. Verstuyft was awarded Superintendent of the Year for Region 20.
