Texas school district members benefit from robust profiles and program promotions.Dickinson ISD offers families a diverse, growing community with a small-town atmosphere that is within easy access of big-town amenities. Students and staff experience a district rooted in tradition, but at the same time, excelling in high-quality learning opportunities covering academics, athletics, fine arts and much more. Spanning 61 square miles, Dickinson ISD is a fast growth district. It’s located halfway between Houston and Galveston. It encompasses the City of Dickinson, the unincorporated communities of Bacliff and San Leon, and portions of the cities of League City and Texas City.
We are known as “Gator Nation,” with “Big Al” as the mascot at all district campuses. We proudly wear the colors of blue and white. Hundreds of new students move into Dickinson ISD each year. Enrollment increased by approximately 2,500 students over the past 10 years. Demographic reports project the district will grow by approximately 3,000 students over the next 10 years.
Voters approved a $94.2 million bond referendum in November 2020 to focus on eight needs within the school district.

Dickinson ISD Academics
• Calder Road Elementary is a 2021 National Blue Ribbon School for exemplary progress in closing achievement gaps among student sub populations. They are one of only 26 schools in Texas and 325 schools across the United States selected for the honor. Principal Sophia Acevedo was one of eight principals across the nation awarded the Terrel H. Bell Award for Outstanding School Leadership.
• Barber Middle School and Calder Road Elementary – were recognized in 2022 with the U.S. News and World Report Best School Badge, for placing among the top 30 percent of schools in the state for student performance in math and reading.
• Barber Middle School and Calder Road Elementary were selected by Solution Tree as National Model Professional Learning Community at Work campuses. They are among only 200 schools and districts in the United States and Canada to receive this honor.
• Dickinson ISD has a robust Career and Technical Education program for students to master the skills needed for a successful transition from high school into post-secondary education and/or into industry. The district offers 25 different industry certifications in 10 different career areas.
• Collegiate High School through College of the Mainland is available for students to earn high school and college credit simultaneously.
• Dickinson ISD offers the AVID Program, which focuses on college and career readiness, in grades 5-12 and at two elementary campuses.
• Students in grades 5-8 can apply for the district’s STEAM Academy for innovative science, technology, engineering, fine arts, and math instruction.
• Dickinson High School had several students recognized in 2021-2022 through the College Board.
Dickinson ISD Community Support
• The Dickinson ISD Education Foundation awarded more than $200,000 in 2021-2022 to fund grants to teachers and scholarships for graduating seniors.
• Dickinson ISD raised $14,620 in the annual “Money for Meals” campaign for the M.I. Lewis Social Service Center, which serves families living in Dickinson ISD.
Dickinson ISD Athletics
• The Dickinson High School Varsity Boys Basketball Team is the 2022 UIL District 24-6A District Champs. They have earned this six of the past seven years.
• Eleven high school powerlifters qualified for the 2022 Powerlifting State Meet. One female powerlifter earned first place at the state meet.
• The Dickinson High School Varsity Football Team earned the UIL District 24-6A Championship in 2021 and regularly advances to the playoffs.
• The junior highs are strong competitors in football, basketball, volleyball and track, while elementary and middle school students learn the fundamentals of athletics through physical education classes.
Dickinson ISD Fine Arts
• The Dickinson High School Band regularly receives Superior rating at all UIL events. Two DHS musicians were recognized in 2021 with All-State Band honors.
• The Kranz Junior High Honors Band was named a 2021 National Winner in the Mark of Excellence/National Wind Band Honors project coordinated by the Foundation for Music Education.
• All high school and junior high bands participating in All Region Band received Sweepstakes awards.
• Awarded the Best Communities for Music Education honor for the past three years from the National Association of Music Merchants for outstanding achievements to provide music access and education to all students.
• Featuring strong art programs at all grade levels, with students regularly earning top honors in local, state and national art contests.
• The Dickinson High School Theatre Department’s 2021 One Act Play was named an alternate to the State One Act Play competition.
Gator Wellness Center
• Dickinson ISD has an ongoing commitment to mental, physical and emotional “wellness.” The Gator Wellness Center provides resources and instruction to address student, staff and community social and emotional learning needs.

Our San Antonio-area Independent School Districts serve 340,238 students. Our school zones are broken up into ISDs (school districts).
The districts cover Bexar, the Hill Country, Comal, and Wilson counties.
Principals, teachers, counselors, nurses, and maintenance are a few of the roles working together to create an environment that is safe and supportive. Academics and extracurricular clubs provide opportunities to all students with varying interests and skill levels.
Carla Voelkel has served as Superintendent in Dickinson ISD since July 2018 leading a growing district of 12,350 students and nearly 2,000 employees. She joined Gator Nation in 2013 as Deputy Superintendent for Educational Services before accepting the Superintendent’s position. When Voelkel joined Dickinson ISD, she was in a sense coming home after serving half of her 40 plus years in education in Galveston County and having previously lived in Dickinson for 17 years. Her experience includes many years in Texas City ISD as a high school teacher, assistant principal, principal, and Director of Elementary Education as well as experience in administrative curriculum roles in Alvin ISD and Channelview ISD. Voelkel earned her bachelor’s degree from Sam Houston State University and her master’s degree and superintendent’s certification from the University of Houston Clear Lake. She and her husband, Jim, have one son and three grandchildren.
