Our San Antonio-area Independent School Districts serve 340,238 students. Our school zones are broken up into ISDs (school districts).

The districts cover Bexar, the Hill Country, Comal, and Wilson counties.

DR GARY BATES

Dr. Gary Bates is the Superintendent of Schools for the Ft. Sam Houston Independent School District in San Antonio, Texas. He has dedicated over 25 years to the field of education, serving in various roles including para-professional, athletic coach/coordinator, history teacher, junior high/high school assistant principal, junior high/high school principal and school superintendent.
Dr. Bates journey in education began with a deep appreciation for the impact that teachers and coaches had on his own life. This inspired him to pursue a career where he could make a similar difference for others. His commitment to education is driven by a desire to provide the best possible learning environment for students, particularly those from military families.
Before his current role at Ft. Sam Houston, Dr. Bates served as the superintendent of Goodrich Independent School District. He has also worked as a principal and adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas and Prairie View A&M University. His extensive experience in various educational roles has equipped him with a comprehensive understanding of the needs and challenges faced by students and educators alike.
Dr. Bates is passionate about creating an educational experience that prepares students for the future by fostering skills such as collaboration, problem-solving, and creativity. He emphasizes the importance of a safe and secure learning environment, especially for military students, to ensure they can thrive academically and personally.
Under his leadership, Ft. Sam Houston ISD has continued to uphold its reputation for excellence in academics and extracurricular activities. Dr. Bates is committed to strengthening relationships with students, parents, and the military community, ensuring that the district provides a rigorous, comprehensive, and personalized education for all students.
Dr. Bates dedication to education and his community is evident in his ongoing efforts to support and enhance the educational experiences of the students at Ft. Sam Houston ISD.
