Brazosport ISD Creates Mobile Learning with The Book Bus
Students get access to books and activities outside of school thanks to the creation of The Book Bus in Brazosport ISD.
Just because summer starts doesn’t mean the learning stops, and Brazosport ISD is making sure of that with their Book Bus. The Book Bus was a thought from the District’s Read 20 Initiative, which was established in 2016 to encourage students to read at least 20 minutes a day. The Book Bus provides children with access to books, activities, and various programs outside of the normal school day and throughout the summer. The bus travels to multiple locations daily such as nearby apartments, elementary schools, and recreation centers. Children can check out the books, enter monthly book giveaways, and return the books to any book bus location.
The Book Bus came to life in 2019 with the help of BISD high school career and technical students and a $25,000 grant from the Brazosport ISD Education Foundation. The creation of the Book Bus included 16 librarians, administrators, and career and technical education teachers from welding and construction, graphic design, and business and marketing. A district-wide art contest gathered design ideas for the exterior of the bus, and graphic design students incorporated the winner of those ideas into the final design. The Foundation’s generous grant will fund programming needs such as books, technology, and other literacy activities for students.
